Santorini is famous for its beaches but not because they are long, sandy and gold as they are in the other Greek islands but because they are unique due to their black sand and pebbles which is a result of the volcano existence in the island. Some of the island’s best beaches are in Kamari, Perissa, Perivolos, Monolithos, Armeni and Amoudi along with the white and red beaches which are accessible by boat.
Kamari Beach
Kamari beach is one of the most famous in Santorini. It is named after the village of Kamari and its characteristic is black pebbles. This beach has changed and improved vastly since the banning of wheeled traffic at the shore road which is now a pedestrian zone, on which hundreds of tourists wander all day long. All kinds of restaurants, tavernas, cafes, bars and shops are available at this pedestrian zone right next to the beach.
Monolithos Beach
Next to Kamari lies the beach of Monolithos. As is the case in all the beaches of Santorini black pebbles cover this beach as well. Monolithos beach is very close to the airport of Santorini accessing it is very easy by bus. A part of Monolithos is organized, with umbrellas and sun beds and the waters are quite shallow ideal for families with small children.
Perissa and Perivolos Beach
Both beaches are long and sandy, they are actually united and they have become quite popular. They are organized, with sun beds, umbrellas, a lifeguard, water sport facilities, numerous beach bars, cafes and traditional tavernas and mini markets. In Perivolos you will find the funkiest loungers, the trendiest crowd, those who attend the wild parties organized by the beach bars such as JoJo, Sea Side Lounge and Taj Majal. If you want to see Perivolos at its peak be there at around 4 in the afternoon because this is when the parties start.
Red Beach
This is one of the most popular beaches in Santorini. Accessing it is not that easy, but it remains one of the most visited beaches of the island. You can reach it on foot from the harbor of Akrotiri or by boat. The reason that this isolated beach attracts people is the unique red color of its pebbles along with the clean waters which deepen gradually.
The red beach is organized and although it is located far away from the villages there are sun beds and umbrellas, snacks and drinks available.
White Beach
It is located 14km away from Fira and along with the red beach it is one of the major tourist attractions. Its name derives from the pebbles that cover it. Actually the white beach is covered by black sand, grey and white big pebbles but it is surrounded by gigantic white rocks that increase the feeling of isolation. Reaching it is possible only by boat from Akrotiri. There, you will find some umbrellas and sun beds as well as a small canteen.
Amoudi Beach
Amoudi is the harbor of Oia. It includes a couple of taverns, a small hotel, a mini market, a small harbor that fishermen use and a small beach. The whole scenery is picturesque and due to the fact that the traditional settlement of Oia is close by the beach of Amoudi is always packed. Amoudi can be accessed by car, with mules from Oia or going down about 300 steps.
Armeni Beach
The small beach of Armeni can be reached by boat from Amoudi or on foot. There is a small footpath connecting Oia with Armeni. If you find it hard descending and ascending 286 steps, riding a donkey is the alternative solution.
A diving centre is available in the small beach of Armeni.
In Santorini you will also find other beaches apart from those mentioned here, each one with unique characteristics and one in common; the black sand and pebbles. Many luxurious resorts are situated by these beaches all worthwhile and able to offer you the most amazing vacations!
