Behind this peaceful picture is Santorini, the islands linked with the legend of the lost Atlantis. The people of Santorini have constantly struggled with the power s of nature.

The Santorini group of islands is almost unique on a worldwide level in being a volcano with a caldera(crater) in the sea. All of Santorini's islands were formed in large part due to volcanic activity, which created a compound volcanic structure.

Alongside the island of Santorini and due to volcanic activity continued on a much milder level, two small islets were created in the caldera- New Kammeni and Old Kammeni. No wonder why Santorini is considered to be a live book of volcanology!
