Oia Village - Finikia

At the northwest part of Santorini, on the right of the road that leads from Fira to Oia and only 15 minutes on foot from Oia, the settlement of Finikia is spreading, with its two squares and the narrow pathways that are hard to cross by vehicle. It looks towards the Baxedes beach and the other Cycladic islands and is surrounded by slopes with vines and circular stone threshing floors.

Finikia is an inland village, not obliged to balance on the edge of the steep cliff, so its buildings are different from those of Oia in terms of size and stability. Not harmed by the 1956 earthquake, houses, churches and kanaves remain exactly as they were and easily travel the visitor to the past.

The main street of Finikia crosses a ravine and this is why it is called Potamos (river) by the locals. A stairway on its right, almost halfway, leads to the pink church of St Matrona, with the broad courtyard and the palm tree.

Stroll on the quiet streets of Finikia and let the bougainvilleas, the white-washed houses, the arched doorways, the ovens, the vines, the yards, the tiny churches and the smell of oregano and thyme fill your eyes, each one taking its own place in order to complete the colorful puzzle of Finikia.
